Pride 2025
This decision flies in the face of lived reality and common sense. It undermines years of progress on equality, inclusion, and the protection of rights for all marginalised genders.
We are already seeing the knock-on effects. Misguided interpretations of this ruling are now threatening to justify discriminatory practices such as disproportionate stop and search tactics, particularly against trans and gender non-conforming people, and it is emboldening those who seek to exclude, erase and delegitimise trans people in public life and public services.
Enough is enough. We will not stand by while the rights of women — ALL women — are trampled on through legal technicalities. This includes cis women, trans women, and non-binary people who are affected by misogyny and gender-based discrimination.
We urge the Labour Government to:
- Publicly oppose the Supreme Court’s ruling and its implications
- Commit to legislative reform that reflects the diversity and dignity of all women
- Demand a review of how this ruling is influencing policing, particularly stop and search powers
- Work with cross-party MPs, activists and legal experts to restore a rights-based approach to gender and equality
The time for silence is over. This ruling does not speak for us.
Pride Petition 2025
We, the undersigned, are calling on the Minister for Women and Equalities, Bridget Phillipson, and the Labour government to speak up and take immediate action following the Supreme Court’s deeply damaging ruling on the legal definition of the word "woman".
