Mike Mackrory

Councillor Mike Mackrory - a tribute

It's with great sadness that we announce the death of Councillor Mike Mackrory. Mike passed away, completely unexpectedly, in his sleep, in the early hours of 21 April.

Mike had been an Essex County Councillor since 2005, a Chelmsford Councillor for 16 years and both Mayor of Chelmsford and Leader of the Council. He was hoping to be re-elected to serve the Springfield Division on 7th May 2026 and was out talking to residents in Springfield throughout April and early May.

His death comes as a great shock to Mike’s many friends and colleagues. We are all thinking of his much-loved wife, children and grandchildren at this time.

Cllr Mackrory dedicated almost all of his adult life to serving the community. He was rightly proud of the work he did as a Liberal Democrat campaigner and councillor to help local residents. He also supported many charities, such as Farleigh Hospice, and every spring-time could be seen sporting a bright yellow top hat in aid of the Marie Curie Great Daffodil appeal.

The election for a County Councillor in Springfield division was suspended, and the new poll took place on June 18th. We are pleased to say that Richard Lee, who has been a committed local champion for many years and a city councillor in the Lawns since 2015 was elected with 54% of the vote. Richard will continue Mike's legacy of dedication and hard work.
