Save our Maternity Services
In January 2025, Maternity Services at Broomfield Hospital were downgraded by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) from “requires improvement” to “inadequate” following an inspection in March 2024. There were elements in the report that were incredibly concerning - it's wasn't just one thing that had gone wrong - it was lots of things.
A later inspection upgraded the service to “requires improvement” again, with the CQC acknowledging positive progress.
I've had a number of meetings with staff at all levels at Broomfield Hospital. I could really feel their positive energy and commitment. The improvements they've made in the last year are clear, and I believe they’ll soon be ready for the CQC to come back and check their progress.
However, the wonderful team of midwives could provide even better care if they had more staff and more support. That's why it was so disappointing to see that the government slashed the ring-fenced funding for Maternity Services from £95m to £2m. We need to keep the national focus on improving safety in Maternity Services and supporting the hardworking front-line staff.
I'm calling for the government to reverse this short-sighted cut in ring-fenced funding - add your name to my petition below.
