Paying tribute to Cllr Tom Willis

Chelmsford Liberal Democrats are deeply saddened to announce the death of Cllr. Tom Willis.
Tom was a lifelong Liberal/Lib Dem and always such a kind, thoughtful and generous man. In the 1970s he was the Liberal Parliamentary candidate standing against then-Labour MP Shirley Williams in Hitchin/Stevenage. Tom was pleased to recall that when he saw her some years later.
Tom was first elected as a Chelmsford Councillor in 1995 in Writtle and later St Andrews ward, before going on to represent Goat Hall right up until his death. In the previous Lib Dem administration, Tom played a key role in arts and culture. After spells in opposition, he was absolutely delighted to be back as part of the administration after the 2019 election.
On the Council he was a member of the Policy Board and took on the specially-created role of Climate Ambassador. As a passionate gardener, he greatly appreciated the importance of natural eco-systems to both the planet and personal well-being. He wanted to make our community, and the world, a better place.
In 2008 Tom was Chelmsford's Mayor and, like all the roles he undertook, Tom carried out his Mayoral duties with great enthusiasm and dedication.
On a number of occasions, Tom also served the cause as the Chair of Chelmsford Liberal Democrats and more recently as President.
Stephen Robinson, Leader Chelmsford Lib Dems, said, "Tom will be greatly missed by us all - not only for his loyalty and support of the party but, more importantly, for his friendship. Our thoughts are with his son, daughters, wider family and friends at this very sad time."
