Chelmsford is officially celebrating, after receiving the news that the city has again been awarded the prestigious Purple Flag accreditation for its evening and night-time economy - similar to the Blue Flag for beaches.

The accreditation scheme aims to raise the standard, and broaden the appeal, of town and city centres between the hours of 5pm & 5am. Areas awarded the Purple Flag are recognised for providing a vibrant and diverse mix of dining, entertainment and culture, while promoting the safety and wellbeing of visitors and local residents.

Lib Dem Councillor Rose Moore, Cabinet Member for Greener and Safer Chelmsford, said:

"This is really welcome news for Chelmsford residents, and a tribute to our Community Safety team who work tirelessly to ensure the safety and wellbeing of everyone enjoying our city centre into the evening.

We're proud to offer a wide range of venues in Chelmsford, so everyone can enjoy the city centre well into the evening and feel safe on their night out. Chelmsford has so much to offer, to people of all ages - entertainment, culture and hospitality on our doorstep.

We're working with police, fire service and volunteer medical students from ARU to ensure people feel safe as they enjoy their time in the city. Our partnership is working well and proves that all agencies have a unique role to play in achieving a thriving night-time economy, worthy of this prestigious award.

The last few years have not been what anyone expected, and we have had to navigate new territory in the fight against COVID-19. The Purple Flag scheme has been instrumental as we learn to adapt to the legacy of this pandemic and recognise the need to tread gently, respecting people who may still be reticent in returning to "normal". Our reopening policies and strategies adjust to this new way of life."

Highlights from Chelmsford's submission include some fantastic projects like the SOS Bus and Knife Angel, the important work being done to tackle drink spiking, and a clear focus on raising standards to improve visitors' experience.

In addition to Chelmsford city centre, we celebrate an additional 10 areas receiving a Full Renewal accreditation, and 12 areas who are receiving an Interim Renewal accreditation.
