A Fair Deal for Chelmsford12.15.00pm UTC (GMT +0000) Mon 14th Apr 2008
Chelmsford Lib Dem Parliamentary Candidate Stephen Robinson was out on the streets this weekend to highlight his campaign for a fair deal for Chelmsford residents - including keeping the 10p tax rate. The 'fair deal' offered by Stephen and the Liberal Democrats include: abolish Council tax (which has DOUBLED in Essex under the Conservatives in the last ten years), and cut income tax by 4p per £ now - for everyone. Commented Stephen - 'Labour have let down the least-well off in our society. From this week, 5.3 million low-paid people are going to be much worse off as their income tax has doubled (with the abolition of the 10p starting rate). Low income families are struggling to find affordable housing, dealing with rising food and energy costs, and now they are having their taxes raised. It's an absolute disgrace.' Under Liberal Democrat plans (a) Council tax would be replaced by a local income tax i.e. clearly based on people's ability to pay, (b) national tax on income would go DOWN by 4p, and (c) tax on pollution and other environmentally-unfriendly practises would go UP. Lib Dems also want to see more affordable housing, and will encourage shared-ownership schemes to help get people on the property ladder.
